Kathleen Loxton bets on what Australia’s spring raceday in 2020 will look like
Spring racing this season is one that will literally be for the books, with COVID-19 impacting everything from our daily routine, loved ones and annual traditions. So, here’s a few things that’ll help you hedge your bets…
1. Go for a versatile bag
A wise person once said, “Handbags speak louder than words”: a top tip to remember when choosing your all-important raceday companion. Trans-seasonal will be the buzzword around handbag trends this season, so feel free to branch out! As long as your bag fits what you need and works with at least a few different outfits in your wardrobe, then it’s definitely a contender. Go for unique shapes if you want it to be a vocal point or choose one with simple lines to keep it minimal.
2. It’s all about the headgear
A standout winner every racing season in the style section is hats, fascinators, and headbands, and in 2020 we can add face masks to the list. When face masks are required or recommended, make them part of your ensemble (though check they fit correctly); colour, patterns and texture are all different ways that your face mask can make your whole look furlongs ahead. Also, if you’re after accessories with a longer lifespan, choose a headband, hair accessory (especially those with pearls), or hat that goes with multiple frocks you own. That way you can use them all season and for any special occasions online or in person 2020 may hold for you yet.
3. The race between classic and modern
This year’s trends are forecasting a heavy split between modern and classic – it just depends which side of the fence you want to fall. Go in monochrome, feminine floral or pastels for a ladylike approach, or modern with structured pieces and statement accessories. If you want to stay on the fence about it, choose a central accessory (or two) that tie the whole look together with a combination of both – think, for example, a dainty bag with a heavy metal chain or a structured belt against dainty florals.
4. Make it tasteful
2020 has been a rough year, so best to indulge in moments like these. If you’re hosting or going to a get together, make sure to support your local butchers, bakers and fish mongers and order something special for the big day! It’ll make your event that much more memorable and takes the stress out of hosting. Otherwise, put those new quarantine-baking skills to the test and get the kids, or your friends, involved beforehand and get creative in the kitchen prior to the main event.
5. Dress to the nines
Just because a mask might be part of your raceday look, or things might be online, doesn’t mean that you have to skimp on your presentation! Go get your hair, nails and makeup done, and if you can’t get your makeup done in person, plenty of brands are now doing virtual consultations, so you can still be advised on, and practice, your spring racing look (and get that tricky eye makeup perfect).
6. But… play it safe!
Ensure that if you are having a gathering at home that your numbers are restricted to government regulations – this means no surprise plus ones! Ensure guests are encouraged to wear masks when advisable and that there is plenty of hand sanitiser to go around. However, if you are going to event, check you are well-prepared before leaving (cash, ID, lipstick, blotting paper, sunscreen, phone, portable charger, mask and hand sanitiser) and get there early. Remember, social distancing and keeping everyone safe is not a bet you should take, risk it on the track instead.
