Homegrown Holidays: Why Your Next Holiday Is Closer Than You Think

Australia is a bucket-list destination for so many people around the world, so it’s little wonder that we’re staying local for our upcoming holidays. In fact, a recent survey found that 60% of Aussies who travelled in the past year did so within Australia! It’s a trend that’s set to continue, so let’s discover just why we’re all choosing to explore more of this sun-drenched country.

Jet lag, delays, baggage claim – and that’s often before you’ve even reached your destination! Travelling overseas for us Australians is no small feat, so it makes sense that we’re all looking to make the most of our holidays and stay local while still experiencing completely new landscapes downunder.

With such diversity, you really can choose-your-own-adventure in Australia, from a lush hinterland getaway to a winter beachside escape. The best part? While we’re a big country, the driving holiday market continues to boom, and we’re embracing road trips and weekend getaways to uncover hidden location gems close to home.

Did you know that shorter, more frequent holidays actually make us happier than multi-week trips? Budget Direct Travel Insurance’s latest data reveals that 51% of Aussies are opting for 1-2 week getaways, with 26% making the most of long weekends to adventure – this means you have more to look forward to across the year and way less chance of post-holiday blues.

While Australia and Winter aren’t synonymous for the international crowd, we know that Australia is nothing short of spectacular in the cooler months! It’s a chance to chill out in more ways than one, while still experiencing plenty of sun and clear skies even when those temps drop. Queensland currently tops the charts for Aussie travellers, with 15% of us considering a trip North for a tropical retreat.

NSW follows at 13%, with Victoria close behind at 10% – NSW is also our leader for local weekend escapes, with travellers getting their fix from short and sweet trips. For a longer stay to really unwind, South Australia is our leader with 58% of stays in our celebrated wine state extending up to 2 weeks.

Of course, with cost of living in the forefront of our minds, 70% of Aussies are actively saving for their trips and sticking to a budget, so planning ahead and booking your Winter 2025 breaks early is essential to get the most out of your spend (and your holiday leave!).

If you’re dreaming of the great open road, a food and wine immersive experience or just plain chilling out, there’s no better time to get acquainted with the wonders of Australia this season – no passport required!
