Tucked away from the main streets of Byron Bay lies 28 Degrees, a retreat that’s perfect for those seeking rest, relaxation, and renewal.
The moment you step through the doors of 28° in Byron Bay, you’re greeted by an ancient Boab tree, its roots deep in the earth, branches stretching skyward. It’s the perfect welcome to 28 Degrees Byron Bay – a calm, open-hearted sanctuary, far from the hustle and bustle of the tourist streets of the most Easterly town in Australia. According to feng shui principles, this majestic tree serves as a guardian, holding the energy within the building, creating an immediate sense of calm. It is the perfect introduction to this gentle and calm retreat that has been designed for rest, rejuvenation, and an unparalleled experience of tranquillity.
As you ascend the staircase, a whimsical element becomes clear, making you feel as though you’ve been whisked away to a favourite children’s book, Enid Blyton’s The Magic Faraway Tree. Each landing feels like a new chapter, where small, inviting spaces appear like hidden homes nestled in the branches. It adds an air of enchantment to the space, a feeling that magic is just around the corner.
For 28 Degrees is more than just a boutique hotel; it is a haven where guests are encouraged to slow down, breathe deeply, and immerse themselves in the soothing rhythms of Byron Bay. Every corner of the space is curated with intention, with a perfect a blend of minimalist luxury and coastal warmth. Owner and interior designer Deb Garske has meticulously and thoughtfully created a sumptuous, slow luxury experience. A sense of peace hangs as easily as the art painted by a schoolfriend of Deb’s – with natural textures, soft linens, and an effortless connection between indoors and out.
There’s no television here, a deliberate choice to encourage guests to log off and chill out. Instead, the rooms offer pure relaxation and luxury: the rooms and villa have a small offering of books from the local bookshop, perfect fodder to curl up and read while you enjoy the local cheeses and wines Deb, and her staff can prepare in advance. Or you can pour yourself a cup of local coffee and just while away some time on your balcony, daydreaming and drifting off to the sounds of the ocean.
You’re in charge of your experience here, beginning with the style of room you prefer. You can choose between a room with a private plunge pool, views of the iconic Cape Byron lighthouse, or classic stays in the Main House for an unforgettable getaway by the ocean. The main house has its own kitchen, impressive in size and facilities, with a larger lap pool and outdoor area. It even has its own library and writing area – the perfect spot for your next book club’s weekend away. We stayed in the Lighthouse Room (number 11) and loved the outdoor bathtub, views of the lighthouse and cosy, cabin-like feeling of our suite. Mornings begin in the perfect Byron Bay way, with a walk and swim on main beach, followed by a bowl of Deb’s bespoke granola recipe, topped with yoghurt and blueberries.
If you do decide to leave your room, the feeling of abundance follows, as you’re spoilt for choice with Byron’s vibrant food scene. Raes on Wategos offers oceanfront fine dining, The Roadhouse serves up wholesome, locally sourced fare, and Bayleaf Cafe is a favourite for its fresh, nourishing breakfasts (you’ll also find a free coffee voucher in your welcome pack in your room to use here). Other must-visit eateries include Bang Bang for Asian fusion, Casa Luna for Mediterranean dining, and Combi for organic smoothies and raw treats. For an elegant experience, Beach restaurant provides stunning coastal views and a locally sourced menu.
Byron Bay itself has long been a magnet for those seeking renewal, whether through ocean dips at sunrise, yoga on the beach, or the town’s many wellness offerings. You can experience magical healing treatments in your own room, including massages from Endota, nourishing facials at Little Company, and detoxifying infrared sauna sessions at Nimbus + Co.
There is something about 28 Degrees in Byron Bay that lingers long after you leave – a sense of having been touched by something ancient and restorative. Perhaps it is the energy held within the Boab tree, the gentle hum of the ocean, or the stories whispered by the wind through the hinterland as you relax on your balcony. Whatever the magic is, it’s an experience you’ll remember forever.
