Peering across our exquisite backyard, it’s easy to see why Australia is a dream destination for intrepid travellers, artists and photographers. Here are five of our favourite picture-perfect locations
Whitehaven Beach, Great Barrier Reef, Queensland
Best for: Beach-lovers desperate to get back to nature. Whitehaven is 7km of crisp white sand, finer than powder. This extraordinary location along Whitsunday Island and in the heart of our State’s famed Great Barrier Reef, is pure, picturesque and endlessly romantic.
Insider tip: The best views are from the sky, so invest in a seaplane ride from Airlie Beach or Hamilton Island. Book a private picnic and stay a while before heading back to the mainland.
Sal Salis, Ningaloo Reef, Western Australia
Best for: Travellers who won’t compromise on comfort. Dubbed ‘the place where the Outback meets the Reef’, Sal Salis is an exclusive beach safari camp nestled in the dunes of the Cape Range National Park near Exmouth.
Insider tip: Make the most of the exclusive experiences on offer here, including marine wildlife trips spotting whales and sharks; and get amongst the community spirit of the ‘glamp’ by star-gazing with fellow guests.
Katherine Gorge, Northern Territory
Best for: Free spirits. Katherine Gorge is one of 13 gorges within the Northern Territory’s Nitmiluk National Park, and she’s quite the stunner.
Insider tip: Choose your own adventure by water or land. The area is perfect for hiking, or, jump aboard a canoe and take in the sights around, above and beyond.
The Twelve Apostles, Victoria
Best for: Creatives who relish seascapes. The enticing rock formations, while now just eight not twelve, are the most scenic attraction on Victoria’s Great Ocean Road.
Insider tip: Visit at dusk or dawn for the most beautiful light falling upon the landscape. While in the area, continue your adventure just up the road to the lovely Loch Ard Gorge in Port Campbell National Park.
Mount Wellington, Tasmania
Best for: City dwellers seeking respite. Mount Wellington towers above Hobart. The drive to the summit itself is as pretty as it gets; but then of course at the top you’re met with the opportunity to view all the beauty that is Hobart, Bruny Island and the D’Entrecasteaux Channel.
Insider tip: Be there for sunrise, and remember to put the camera down.
