Get it’s Kaileigh Carew brings us everything we missed from Australian television’s night of nights, the Annual TV Week Logie Awards ceremony.
In a room filled with only familiar faces were celebrities, including Kelly Rowland, Lincoln Lewis, Hamish and Andy, Boy George and Sophie Monk, just to name a few. Although the Logies is about recognising Australian television, it has also become an event acknowledged for its fashion statements, iconic stage performances and inspiring speeches. This means that those without an invite unfortunately do not get to experience these moments first hand. Don’t stress yet though, as I am going to do my very best to bring the most important moments back to life for you.
Best dressed
Sophie Monk was the talk of the town with her Gold Logie inspired gown designed by Jason Grech. The gold metallic dress was something that I truly believe could have been seen from space with its many metres of fabric. The Love Island host joked on her Instagram with a photo caption stating, “If you can’t win a gold logie… dress as one.” However, it was Neighbours actress, Olivia Junkeer that stole the show. Wearing an Oglia-Loro Couture two-piece gown, she was on trend and looked like Princess Jasmine with a 2019 makeover.
Performance of the night
Delta Goodrem gave us her absolute everything on stage and, being Australia’s golden girl, there was not a lip still when her iconic Born to Try lyrics played. Jessica Mauboy also performed, singing her new single, Little Things, which stunned the entire crowd and left everyone speechless. Boy band, Why Don’t We performed their new single, I Don’t Belong in this Club, for the first time in Australia, and was also a huge crowd pleaser! However, it was Guy Sebastian who had the audience completely captivated with his performance, Choir. The meaningful song was dedicated to his former band member, Luke Liang, who passed away last year. The purpose behind the lyrics, with the fresh and upbeat rhythm of the song, had everyone’s ears switched on and everyone’s eyes on him!
Speech of the night
When Tom Gleeson won the Gold Logie of the evening, his speech was controversial to say the least and resulted in some not so impressed faces amongst the crowd. However, Tom Gleeson is a comedian and to me his speech was a piece of comedic work. It was funny, light-hearted and showcased who he is and why he deserved to win, but I’ll let you decide that one for yourself. The real speech of the night was that by Australian Journalist, Kerry O’Brien. As soon as he stepped foot onto the stage the entire room gave a standing ovation. As one of the most respected journalists in Australia, in his speech Kerry shared the importance of journalism. He touched on how the industry is struggling due to the technologically driven era which we are a part of, yet it endures. He shared inspiring words to everyone working in the media, mentioning to deliver programs of relevance, quality and integrity. He also shed light on the ongoing issue of racism towards the Aboriginal community, and how we should not be ignorant of Aboriginal culture. He finished the speech with love, thanking his family for their support, particularly his wife, Sue. My favourite line was this: “She [wife, Sue Javes] also told me to avoid using the word ‘journey’ tonight. So, I’ll close simply by saying this has been a wonderful road to have been allowed to travel. Thanks to all of you, especially in the living rooms of Australia, who have travelled that road with me.” And just like that, it’s like you didn’t miss a thing…
