1. Emily in Paris: Netflix
Unless you’ve been living under a rock, you would’ve seen, or at least heard about, Netflix’s currently most hotly debated series, Emily in Paris. Darren Star, accompanied by fellow Sex and the City alum, legendary costume designer Patricia Field, have joined forces to create a extravagant show about a young American who moves to Paris in order to bring “an American point of view” to a fancy French marketing company, which the Chicago firm she works for has acquired. And while there has been much deliberation around Emily’s age and the realities of high fashion marketing and social media, our advice is simple: love it or hate it, binge it now. Comprenez vous?
2. Ratched: Netflix
A Ryan Murphy-Evan Romansky masterpiece, which stars many notable names including Sarah Paulson, Sharon Stone and Cynthia Nixon. Ratched is adapted from Ken Kesey’s 1962 novel One Flew Over the Cuckoo’s Nest and the series follows the story of one of its main characters, Nurse Ratched. It is a phycological thriller that has received kudos from the likes of Stephen King, so be warned, it’s not for the faint of heart and is gore heavy.
3. The Social Dilemma: Netflix
An absolutely blistering documentary about the way social media works and how it impacts us as individuals and as a society. Full of jaw-dropping interviews with industry insiders, it will make you think twice before doing a “quick” Instagram check or Facebook like. One to watch with any adolescents in your life particularly, it’ll make all ages take note, no matter where you fall on the social media user spectrum.
4. Whose Vote Counts, Explained: Netflix
If you’re feeling confused about American politics right now, don’t worry, you’re not alone. This docu-series, narrated by Leonardo DiCaprio, Selena Gomez, and John Legend, covers everything from how the system works to whether you can buy an election in modern America. A must see before the polls close that is as entertaining as it is informative.
5. The Trial of the Chicago 7: Netflix
This eye-opening film, directed by Aaron Sorkin, is based on the trial of the seven now-renowned activists who were involved in the Chicago-based Democratic National Convention countercultural protests during 1968. Starring, amongst a talented cast, is Sacha Baron Cohen, Eddie Redmayne, Joseph Gordon-Levitt and Yahya Abdul-Mateen II. Timely, entrancing, and superbly written, The Trial of the Chicago 7 will have you on the edge of your seat.
6. The Undoing: FOX SHOWCASE (released 26 October, 2020)
Starring none other than Nicole Kidman, Donald Sutherland, and Hugh Grant, this phycological thriller directed by Susanne Bier and produced by Big Little Lies’ David E. Kelley, is set to be a quality nail-biter. Death, lies, and mystery abound as Grace Fraser (Kidman) strives to uncover her husband’s, Jonathan Fraser (Grant), secrets… this might just be the undoing of our productivity.
7. The Crown season 4: Netflix (released 15 November, 2020)
Thatcher, Princess Dianna… and her wedding dress. There is so much to look forward to in the next season of The Crown! Joining the all-star cast is Gillian Anderson (playing Margaret Thatcher) and Emma Corrin (playing Princess Diana) as the royal family enters the 1980s. There’s sure to be more than your fair share of tea to sip, so don that tiara and pinkies up.
8. Inventing Anna: Netflix (TBA)
Based on the utterly wild true story shared by New York magazine in an article entitled “How Anna Delvey Tricked New York’s Party People” by Jessica Pressler, this series has to be seen to be believed. Julia Garner (known for her role in Ozark) plays Delvey/Sorokin, the con artist who took “fake it till you make it” to another level playing heiress with New York’s elite, while Anna Chlumsky plays a journalist trying to expose the lies. Get ready to binge the next masterpiece of Shonda Rhimes.
