Having a healthy gut not only impacts how we feel and look, it also helps maintain general health and well-being, which is why it is so important to understand and look after it
1. Eat prebiotic foods
These are foods that are able to resist digestion, and make it to the large intestine intact where they feed the good bacteria.
2. Eat probiotic foods such as sauerkraut, miso and kimchi.
These contain live bacteria similar to that found in the human gut.
3. Hydrate.
We all know we need to drink more water, but did you know that adequate water consumption is important for a healthy gut?
4. Use a squatty potty.
Squat toilets exist around the world for a reason! Our modern toilets make it harder to have a proper bowel movement. A simple fix it to use a small foot stool under your feet when you use the bathroom.
5. Eat in a parasympathetic or “rest and digest” state.
When we’re stressed, our digestive function is inhibited. So many of us are eating while working or watching true crime shows on Netflix, which means we are not able to properly digest our food. Taking some deep breaths and slowly and mindfully enjoying your meals can help you shift into a parasympathetic or “rest and digest” state, which can improve digestion.
