Supporting Mums and their Mental Health

Kylie Allen talks about her newly released book, Empowered Women Empowering the World

According to Beyond Blue, 1 in 6 women will experience postnatal depression or postnatal anxiety. That’s an alarming figure. Kylie Allen who runs Inspiring Minds Studio knows this all too well. She was one of those women who  experienced the intense hold of postnatal depression and has shared some of her story in the newly released book.

The book is a collaboration of 15 everyday women, who have overcome adversity, mental health issues, addiction and trauma to have happiness and success in motherhood, business and life. This is the perfect book for women to be reading right now. It is giving hope and inspiration in what has been a really tough time for so many.

Victorians have spent more of this year in lockdown than out of lockdown. This is having a huge impact on people’s mental health. This book has come at exactly the right time for so many women to feel supported, inspired and empowered to keep going, overcome their challenges and make the changes they want in their lives.

“I know first-hand how debilitating postnatal depression is. I felt ashamed and didn’t want to burden others with how I was feeling. I now realise that suppressing what was happening, only made things worse. For a long time, I only looked after myself physically, and as a result spiralled into a dark hole. It is so vital that mums take the time to look after themselves both physically and emotionally.”

There are a number of support services available to support women on their motherhood journey, including COPE (Centre of Perinatal Excellence) and PANDA (Perinatal Anxiety & Depression Australia).

“It took 18 months for me to finally get the help I needed. I felt like a complete failure, but I want other women to know that asking for help does not make you a failure. It takes a lot of courage and you owe it to yourself, your children, family and friends to be the best version of yourself possible.”

In Kylie’s chapter of Empowered Women Empowering the World, she shares tips for mums on nurturing both their own mental health and their child’s mental health. “There are a lot of women who have been in a very dark place or feeling like they’ve lost themselves. Please know, that there is always support available to you and a way to make things better. You’ve got this!”
